WaveSurgeon has a number of unique and useful features:

Unique editing features

WaveSurgeon will automatically detect beats (e.g. kick, snare, hi-hat or any other sound), and allow you to copy and paste these around in the rhythm over existing sounds, in perfect time. This allows you to quickly reprogram breakbeats to create new rhythms. Other effects include silence, quantise, and reverse, which, while simple, can be very effective.

Stereo

WaveSurgeon fully supports stereo samples, and will detect segments in the normal way.

The extract silence function

WaveSurgeon has a feature which strips silence from samples (according to a threshold). This also allows you to rip a sample CD track (e.g. using Dido, in the download section), load the resulting wave file into WaveSurgeon, and then use this function to strip silence from between each sample; a slice point is placed where the silence used to be. This is amazingly convenient, as you can quickly save off multiple breakbeats from a CD track very rapidly; if you used it on a track full of (say) a 909 kit, you could rip the CD track, process it in WS, transfer the samples across to the A3k, and have them mapped automatically across the keyboard.

Sampler and sound bank support

WaveSurgeon will transfer samples using the SDS and SMIDI transfer formatsa3k.gif (8547 bytes) (SMIDI advanced registration only). Owners of the advanced registration and a Yamaha A3000 or EX series sampler can take advantage of WaveSurgeon's automapping features. Sound card owners can create SoundFont, DLS, GigaSampler, or Pinnacle Bank files with an accompanying midi timing template at the touch of a button.

New in version 2.7

WaveSurgeon now supports the Akai S2000 / 3000XL / 3200XL, E-mu ESI 32 / 4000, and EOS machines (E6400 / E4, etc - see question 15 in the FAQ) range of samplers; owners of these machines can now benefit from automatic mapping that WaveSurgeon provides. User Mark Harrop said:

esi4000.gif (13411 bytes)'It places the samples perfectly.....it doesn't overwrite the previous settings..... you don't need a template..... it's as easy as making a SoundFont. You have just transformed my ESI into a truly creative tool. I've just spent the past half hour having the biggest fun playing with the filters on various drum loops without once having to think about sample placement, zoning etc etc etc.....'

Also introduced is DirectX plugin effect support. Now you can use your favourite plugins to mangle your loops even further! Vocode, reverb, compress, or flange your beats... this new feature lets you expand WaveSurgeon to cover any type of processing imaginable! Effects settings are compatible with audio major audio programsTo get started, it may be a good idea to check out some of the free plugins on our links page.

Batch transfer (Advanced registration only)

WaveSurgeon now has ability to select multiple wave or aiff files, and have WaveSurgeon transfer them across one after the other automatically and map them across the keyboard; this saves a great deal of time when importing samples from PC disk.
